Share on the InternetWhen the internet began to take hold among the public it was thought of as the ultimate form of information sharing. Not only does the internet allow for a large amount of information to be stored and shared between users, but it is also outside the control of any government.

Ideally, this would prevent governments from restricting information from their citizens, as people could simply go online to find it. Sadly, this idealistic viewpoint is mostly untrue in the modern world, and is one of the reasons that a worthwhile approach is to change your IP address online.

The internet is unique as a medium of information sharing, because it exists without borders. The information that is available online is not provided by the government, or powerful interest groups. Instead, online information is created by people at all levels of society, and with many different viewpoints. The perspectives that are presented are frequently incorrect, often full of errors and many times consist of people’s opinions, without any evidence backing them up.

To some extent, this is the beauty of the internet. It allows people to speak up freely about their own closely held beliefs, without having to worry about what other people thing. Through the use of blogs, people can discuss anything in detail, providing a way for other people online to read and comment, if that is what the poster wants. Forums provide effective ways for people to engage in lively discussion about just about any topic imaginable.

However, the internet is not the free environment that it was once believed to be. In fact, governments can, and do, have strong control over the content that people see. The two most prevalent types of control are censorship and geo-restrictions, which normally come from governments and individual websites respectively.

Firewall RestrictionCensorship is when people within a region are prevented from seeing specific websites. For example, in the UAE, websites are censored if they are contrary to the beliefs and values system of the UAE. As you can imagine, this includes a lot of websites.

In contrast, geo-restriction is where a website, often one like Netflix that streams movies and television programs, restricts the access to the site to people within a certain area. BBC iPlayer does this.

Both of these issues can be bypassed if you change your IP address online. IP addresses are country specific, so altering your IP address fools the mechanics behind censorship and geo-restrictions, meaning you get access to anything you want, no matter where you are in the world.
